Partnership with Teign School

15th March 2022

Newton Abbot Rugby Club are delighted to have partnered with Teign School in Kingsteignton, in offering after school rugby sessions for girls in Yr7 to Yr10 this Spring Term.

Steve Loder with support of Meg Venables have been running a 10-week introduction to rugby programme from Jan to April, with the aim for getting more girls involved in the game of rugby. Providing them a pathway if they enjoy these classes to then come along and join in with the girl’s squads at NARFC.

The up take and enthusiasm from the students has exceed all our expectations, at peak we’ve had over 50 girls in attendance and average well over 30 each week, with a number now becoming players at the club since starting.

Tom Chaplin the Head of Physical Education at Teign School said “The partnership with NARFC has been a tremendous asset to our extracurricular offer to students in this case particularly for female students. Using the clubs qualified community coaches, the students have received high quality introductory sessions to rugby. The yard stick to judge the success of this can be seen in student up take where over 30 students have been in attendance every week. We are so grateful for the partnership with the club and are excited where this can lead in the future”.

Providing the students a pathway if they enjoy these classes to then come along and join in with the girl’s squads at NARFC.

“My daughter recently started the after-school rugby sessions run by NARFC. She loved every minute of the sessions, mostly down to the professional coaching she received. She quickly decided she wanted to join the training at NARFC and has been training with the U13 girls’ team for 7 weeks now. The training and coaching is of a very high standard and she smiles all the way through the session. She has played in two matches and her confidence and ability is growing each week. I’m sure that without the input at the school level from NARFC she would not have decided to join the girls team” From Nicola, daughter Ameillia new U13 player.

With the Women’s rugby world cup this year and Newton Abbot Rugby Club ambition to grow our girl’s section to be recognised as the place to come and participate in rugby in the local area, it’s a very exciting time to come along and give it a go, with lots of new players starting it’s a great way to make new friends, keep fit and benefit from all the values rugby offers as a team sport.
